PROGRAMS

Programs at HUG are seasonal and take place mostly during the growing season. We're always open to partnering with other organizations and community members to bring valuable services to those most in need.

Community Farming

The Farm manager, farm crew, and community volunteers work regularly to maintain HUG neighborhood agricultural gardens and/or flower and herbal landscapes within our food network. Volunteers are always welcomed and we aim to connect with neighbors as well as provide education and wellness to the community through this group effort. Farm days are April - October. Please inquire on our farm days by emailing hugoperations@gmail.com

Farm to Preschool

Teaching youth to grow and prepare food is the focus of our Farm to Preschool program. Children as young as 2 years of age are guided into planting seeds, taking care of their crops, harvesting, and preparing the food grown by their own hands for consumption. We currently have 4 Farm to Preschool garden beds on the 1/4 acre HUG farm and utilize food from neighboring gardens to supply fresh produce to pre-school families year round.

Black Sundays

Adapted from Black Futures Farm based in Portland, OR Black Sundays is a Bi-Weekly Community Reunion exclusive to members of the Black Sunday club born out of the partnership with Black Moms Rock, a grassroots organization in Tacoma, WA that is dedicated to holding safe and culturally relevant space for African Descendants. Please note that Black Sundays is exclusive to Black Folks as a Black Lives Matter measure in order to shield its member participants from global anti-blackness and racial trauma.

UFN & HUG Grub

Participation in HUG’s Urban Farm Network (UFN) and HUG Grub relies on neighbors sharing a portion of their yard where HUG builds and manages gardens on that shared land. Together, the shared sites create one urban farm network and in season (June - October) HUG shares the produce from our Urban Farm Network in our HUG Grub Neighborhood Food Share Program. The only criteria for picking up a bag of produce is the exchange of your time, talent, or treasure valuable enough to share with our greater community.
